Sure - IF you can get it locally. I've phoned EVERY textile manufacturer
and importer in the UK and the only nylon you can buy has already been
treated with polyurethane (in Taiwan, where it's imported from). Maybe
this'd be OK, maybe not. I'd need to experiment with it.
Funny, this part of Scotland (Dundee) used to be the textile capital of the
world. Now all the mills are closed and we only get the stuff that sells
best.
Having said that, I'm very happy with my canvas hull. I saw a bunch of
nylon ones when I was in the Pacific North West a few weeks ago. They're
very slick indeed, but don't have the 'real' feel of canvas. Also, canvas
tightens when wet (like a drumskin!) and nylon, if anything, slackens off.
OK - I'm an old back-to-the-lander, but that's why I choose to paddle a
baidarka made of willow withies, reclaimed wood and cotton canvas, man!
