Stefano, I do a similar footrest in the baidarkas by stringing a block of
wood on a piece of 1" webbing. I run the webbing up the sides between the
ribs and skin to someplace near the seat, and run it through a simple
plastic buckle for adjustment. Really like the heelrest.. it is just right.
Allows me to lock my knees into the knee rests very securely. Also very
relaxing, helps solve circulation problems caused by bending the foot
upwards on conventionsl foot or toe rests.

I use since years a 2 " nylon strap ( discarded car seat belt, is softer
than generally available strapping) adjustable with fast buckles and lined
with insulation foam tubing (soft and about 1/2" thick), suspended with
velcro strap rings from the back of the coaming. It adjusts readily to
anybody's back and although it lies a little low, you can pull it up once
inside, then lean on it and it will stay placed. The fast buckle allows
adjustment to trim the kayak lengthwise and while paddling to change
slightly position.

As for the knee braces, two short lengths of tubing lined with the same foam
and placed as carlins a bit inside the cockpit opening provide good grip.
They can be made to slide easily should you want a large open cockpit to
enter or exit.

I devised also a very comfortable footrest (or brace rather) but I assume it
would not fit a baidarka. Mine is on a stitch and glue kaysk and lies over
two straps of wooden reinforcement placed sideways.

Stefano
