Thanks Chuck, both Keith and you have clarified a lot for me. I'll be using a
traditional design based on your comments. I think I'll go with a two fist wide
loom - neither long nor short and see how it goes.

Given the material cost, it won't be too painful to be wrong. The time spent
carving is therapeutic anyway (whenever I do any work with wood, I get the
feeling my late grandfather, a carpenter, is watching over my shoulder.)
