Given the material cost, it won't be too painful to be wrong. The time
spent
carving is therapeutic anyway (whenever I do any work with wood, I get the
feeling my late grandfather, a carpenter, is watching over my shoulder.)

Thanks again!

For me the most tedious parts of making a paddle are drawing the guidelines
and cutting out the blank. The most fun and relaxing part is using the
drawknife and spokeshave, and watching the shavings curl. This is also the
most "artistic" part of the process, when success or failure is governed not
by guidelines and measurements, but by sight, touch, and aesthetics.

My great-grandfather was a Norwegian-born carpenter who in his seventies was
still lugging around a toolbox too heavy for most people to lift, but he had
retired by the time I knew him, so I can't claim a direct influence. :-)
