Hi all, I am contemplating my next project and am
wondering if anyone has had any experience with
shorter variations on the aleut design. I have read
of Cpt. Cooks records of 12' kayaks and other early
explorers who mention shorter lengths than any
published boats I can find. I currently use a plastic
whitewater kayak and I enjoy the nimbleness and quick
acceleration but I would like to try my hand at an
aleut style SOF. I thought I might try around a 12'
gunwale length and perhapse a 20" beam. I was
thinking about also adding moderate rocker to make the
midsection sit lower in the water- faster turning and
mabee more stabiblity??? I would appreciate any
feedback or ideas along these lines, especially if
anyone has any info on the pre-russian aleut boats.
Thanks- John Haynes
