I bent square tubing into a U shape and suspended a two inch wide piece of
webbing across the open end. This is suspended in such a way that it
conforms to any shape. The boat is placed in the webbing and strapped down
in two places. These U shaped tube assemblies are attached to a standard set
of roof racks. I have carried my boats this way for eight years now without
any damage.

I just put those foam blocks on top of a Yakima rack, and tie the hull down
with rope. I did cut some foam wedges and glue them to the top of the foam
blocks to make them fit the steeper vee of the baidarka hull. Same works on
Subaru.
