I read somewhere on the internet that automotive antifreeze (gylcol etc.) is
the best chemical for stopping wood rot. I don't know if mildew would be
included. It would seem that your best bet would be to soak the frame in a
solution that will kill whatever is currently eating it - then treat the
wood with a sealant - I've had good luck with the tradtional boiled linseed
oil / turpentine / japan drier solution.

Hello out there in cyberspace,
I just bought a klepper aerius II and dicovered that it has dark
coloring on the wooden frame. I guess it has to do with the fact that
it has been stored in a humid environment. I was wondering about how to
treat it. There are several options as i se it. Sandpaper, washing with
chlorine and so on. Any suggestions out there? Funny actually, my
baidarka frame which I store outside under roof for five years now, has
no sign of mildew. The frame is only treated with linseed oil and
turpentine. I know the klepper has been stored in a similar way as my
baidarka, that is under roof and assembled. I would expect klepper to
do a better job than me on protection against mildew.
