Thanks for all of the information on glues and plastic, it is much
appreciated and will help get me past a building "slump"! The weather
has
been so nice for the past few months here that all of my free time has
been
spent paddling, rather than building. Maybe I need to move far North....

You can also use Nylon, which is tougher, but more expensive - and has a
different translucent look. Another marine plastic to consider is
Starboard. It is less abrasion resistant, but retains a bright white
look. Didn't you pick up some Walrus bone in Greenland last time you
were there? :-) BTW, Harvey Golden was in Victoria recently. His
presentation was rather low-key, but I'd say it was one of the most
intriguing presentations I have ever attended.

To answer Juan, about my concern with glues and edge tools, I have had
some
bad experiences in the past, not just with dulling edge tools but
actually
with minute chips in the cutting edge from contact with glue. This is
more
of a problem with the high-carbon Hock blades and other aftermarket
blades
that are around Rc 62. Their hardness and ability to take a fine edge
makes
them a little more brittle. You can also run into a similar problem if
you
sand and then decide more planing is in order. The abrasive charged wood

will do similar damage to edges (not to mention scratching the soles of
your planes).

I maintain two sets of chisels and planes, with respective higher and
lower angles. The greater the angle, the less prone to micro-edge
chipping. To avoid abrasive charged wood I use compressed air to scour
the surface after each grit. Alternatively, cabinet scrapers in a
variety of shapes are the best solution. Of course, if you don't like
sharpening chisels and the whole process thereof, you will like cabinet
scraper sharpening even less. I also have a carbide-edged paint scraper
I use for glue removal for preparatory procedures..
