>I am thinking of making a single bladed paddle for my baidarka. I thought
it
would be good to carry all the time as a spare. I wondered if under certain
conditions if a single bladed paddle offered any advantages over double
bladed
kayak paddles?<
I frequently carry a single bladed paddle for negotiating small passages
through islands or running small streams. It's good for negotiating
spartina grass and can easily be "whipped out" in a pinch (no assembly
required). You can paddle right next to the boat in a very narrow channel
and use it for a skeg if you are sailing or using a kite to pull you along.
You can store it below deck in rough water since it is short, and it makes a
good shovel (with a handy upper grip) for those frantic unscheduled pit
stops.
