I use the extremely comfortable Chota lined neoprene paddling glove
exclusively now. I use the glove year around. The fingers of this glove are
already curved to grip a paddle loom.
I don't really grip a paddle very tightly so the blade can seek the optimal
angle to the water through the stroke. The slack grip on the loom allows
the loom to work more in the hand, which causes chaffing in the grip area.
I have warn the grip area down about 1/4" in that area on several unfinished
(linseed oiled only) paddle looms now. When I started using gloves with
grippy palms the ware was accelerated until I wrapped the area with section
of (disguised) steering wheel leather wrap.
I hard coated a loom once which worked until it chipped then it tore up
hands and gloves until I sanded it.
