I used the tie the skeg to the underside of the boat
method as illustrated in one of Petersen's book. The
string is run through holes in the skeg close to the
keel and is tied to a piece of wood laying on top of
the deck and hanging over the gunwales by about an
inch on either side. A string run from the piece of
wood to the cockpit keeps the whole rig from sliding
off the end of the boat.

The beauty of this was that in a beach landing, the
skeg simply folded over without any harm. No need to
worry about snapping off as you would have to with a
fixed skeg.

And it kept the boat from weathercocking.
