There are many good woods available out here in the west, tho most of the
pine I've seen I wouldn't call boatbuilding wood (without a lot of scarphing
and piecing together). I have been known to drag home pieces of wood found
while on vacation though. My newest kayak, TWO RAVENS, has pieces of
mahogany from a sailboat that grounded and broke apart on the California
coast retreived while my wife and I were honeymooning 5+ years ago. Just
the story and history may be worth schlepping it across the country.
