Is it possible that our recent discussion about how many foot pounds can
dance on the head of a paddle reveals more about the question, and the
questioners than it does the answer?

Numbers and decimal points seem so pure and absolute that they can't help
but be appealing, but my experience with small craft is that they are never
theoretical. It's also hard to know what meaning to attach to those decimal
points in the hundreds column when I can change the trim of my boat just by
spitting from one side to the other. It's fun and all, but I try not to get
carried away.

Up north some people say that Abstract Thought is the "White Man's burden".
