In speculating on the possibility of japanese skin boats, wouldn't it be
useful to first consider whether they have seals in the area ? And if
there are other alternative materials at hand (unlike in the arctic
regions), then would animal skin be preferred over tree bark ? Did the
japanese of old wear seal skin clothing ? Did the Ainu ? I think I
remember reading about the Ainu using deer hide or bark for boat hulls.
