John Neihardt wrote a book called The River and I,
which is an account of a trip down the Missouri before
the dams went up. Nice reading for the historical
view. The book is also worthwhile reading even if you
don't intend to do the trip. Besides all that, the
book is worthwhile reading because it contains an
account of how Neihardt and his partner build their
canoe on the banks of the river and are beset by a
group of idlers who tell them that they will never
make it and that their boat is all wrong for the
adventure. And so on and so forth.
