If you're interested in the kayaks used on the 1st Fram expedition, I
collected a bunch of information on them. I was in Oslo in May this year
and got to survey Fredrik Johansen's boat at the Fram Musuem. (Nansen's
kayak is in the Ski Museum, I later learned.) I have photos and
measurements and am working on drafting a lines drawing. I also surveyed
one of the greenland kayaks that Nansen and his pals collected from
Nuuk at the end of their First Crossing of Greenland in 1889. You can see

Johansen's kayak is in pretty good shape, considering it's age. It's a
little distorted from laying on one side, but it's intact and shows all
the wear and repairs they made on the ice. It's an incredible artifact and
I was really thankful I had the opportunity to work with it, despite the
cold floors, the gawks of german tourists and norwegian schoolkids on
fieldtrips and the lack of bathrooms after drinking tea in the morning to
wake up. The boat stank too, but what would you expect from sweat,
wolfskin and a year of travelling through the arctic? I was glad to
experience it all.
And yes, it is framed of bamboo.
