Dear Kirsten,
I believe I've built the kayak you refer to (the MAE 593-76[?]), though my
replica is 17" wide. Many factors may have contributed to a less-stable
kayak, e.g. heavy gunwales, exaggerated depth, 'differrent-than-depicted'
hull-sections, etc, but what can help greatly is practice, patience,
persistence, and relaxation in the kayak. Ballast ought to help, and is
something you'd likely wean yourself off of in time anyways. I'm only 5#
heavier than you, and in not-too-long a' time, I became quite comfortable in
my replica-- it does take practice-- and occasional dunkings. The bicycle
analogy of course comes to mind. . . . you shoulda seen my FIRST bike-ride!
I hope it works out in time-- its a superb,sea- and storm-worthy kayak, and
I know many folks who have built it-- and few if any thought it
'perfectly-stable' at first try.

> okay so I finally finished my 18'4" by 18" Aluet baidarka. It looks
beautiful! It pained me greatly to cover up such a gorgeous frame! But now
it's done and last night I put it in the water for the first time. Proof
that you can't float on looks alone. I can' t even sit in it because it's so
unstable! Both primary and secondary are non existant. I paddle high
performance boats a lot, I'm not being a wimp, it's impossible. I only
weigh around 120 so I put someone in it who weighs 220. It was better, but
still not possible to paddle so ballast won't work. Where did I go wrong?
