I would not use that as a benchmark. I've paddled boats that I can't keep upright without a paddle in the water. I've gotten accustomed to 2 of my boats that I used to need to keep a blade in the water at all times. One is still touchy. With my 17" beam surf ski I'm now comfortable enough in that in flat water I can take off my pfd and coat, then put the pfd back on, without rafting up. While that may not seem like much of a feat it took me 2 years to get that level of balance and comfort. I don't think I can do the same garment change in my 19" beam Dyson 5.7 baidarka, with the seat in.

I just spent a little while comparing them, cross sections and depth to sheer. You are quite right, they are very similar.
