Similar garment (one piece including hood, full length arms and skirt,
often long enough to hang to the knees) in Greenland is known as a tuiliq
or tuilik. There is a modern neoprene version sold by Brooks
(http://brooks.uniserve.com/greenland.html) -- apparently their largest
market is to folks in Greenland (sealskin being expensive to get). There
is a growing use of them here on the East Coast -- I was just at the
DelMarVa Paddler's Retreat and there were a fair number in use.
One key advantage is the flexibility the long garment provides. This past
Sunday (only third time I've worn mine), from sitting in the cockpit of
the Romany Explorer I was able to twist around and lay chest down on my
back deck facing the stern with the skirt in its original position, still
sealed and watertight (which I proved by almost immediately capsizing --
stayed with the boat and after a minute or so in the Pertrussen (sp)
position, pulled myself back into the boat and rolled up).
Very interesting adjunct to the boat, I'm looking forward to playing with
it more.
