Well I use a part of my 19" wide Shields skin boat to help it keep going the
right direction in challenging conditions called a rudder. I really hate
rudders , relying on a rudder instead of paddling skills, extra complexity,
extra drag, it looks kinda untraditional on my neotraditional skin boat.
None the less I have paddled the boat with and without a rudder and it just
seems to work a whole lot better with if your going fast. You can power
along without wasting any energy on corrective strokes and when "linking
waves" while surfing chop or following seas I find it very useful. With that
said my next boat definitely wont have a rudder- of course it wont be a racy
boat either.
