Thanks, Brian and Peter, for your responses. Bob Boucher's simpler approach appeals to me, and I’m tending towards following his video, but will use synthetics for the lashing and skinning, regardless of whose instructions I follow.
Considering the cross sectional dimensions of the gunwales are far larger than the keel or chine stringers, and less likely to sustain an impact due to being above water, I doubt if the loss in strength due to the increased angle of 28 degrees is a concern. Thanks for making me aware of it, though.
