Morris mentions using silicone to seal a kayak in his book, it was not very
durable and he said he would not try it again. I would think that
polyurethane paint would be cheaper anyway.

Even the really inexpensive "Sno-roof" would be more durable I would expect.

The silicone does not bond very well to nylon or polyester fabric, and it has
almost no abrasion resistance.

This is consistent with my experience with silicone, though I have never tried
it on a kayak, nor would I because of this.

The cheapest thing I used, which worked just fine on a child's kayak I built,
was some left over oil based house paint I bought at a garage sale for about
$1 for almost a whole gallon. It it pretty tough too.
