All of our modern "synthetics" are derived from living organisms via the
oil that was produced by their remains so many eons ago. The definition of
"organic" may have started as meaning from living organisms only to
transition to the chemical definition of carbon-based subtances. So, for
those of us far out enough, both definition fit as being derived from living
organisms.
