Thanks for the info and the encouragement. I was going to try the 13 oz
polyester that I learned about from Bill Low and also do his lamination for
the keelson, gunnels, etc. I will let you know how it goes.

Hi George,

I'd always thought of myself as a crusader against overbuilding, usually

people tell me the boats are too light.

90 pounds ready to paddle means fully outfitted including a full set of

floorboards. I used 26 oz nylon coated with hypalon which probably accounts

for at least 15 of those 90 pounds. The 13 foot sailing dinghy on my website

weighs in at about 75 fully skinned but we used a lighter cloth and a

lighter coating.

Here's a few ways to reduce weight.

You could reduce weight by using fewer floors more widely spaced - I do

these days.

You could use something other than oak for ribs.

I launched a 16 foot version of sumi this winter that weighed in right

around 100. I used fewer floors, wider spaced ribs, and generally reduced

scantlings where ever it seemed feasible, in the end posts, floors, thwarts,

risers, you name it. This reduction is easier after your first umiak, at

least you have something to go on. Also NO hypalon.

I just got a copy of Snaith's book from the local library. Has anyone out

there built his Sumiak?

I had some questions to anyone who has built it or a similar boat.

Was it 90 lbs as he suggests? Sounds heavy for a 14 foot open skin boat.

How did you power it? Paddles, oars, sail, outboard?

Thanks in advance for the information.

George
