First, don't panic! Looks like the got the "new" taken out of it earlier than
planned. The way it broke sounds o odd, what kind of wood is it? Was there
an obvious flaw in the grain or runout? Do you have any little "helpers"
playing in your shop when you were not around?

Anyway, the easiest fix I think to to take a piece of wood the same size as
the gunwale and about as long as 20 times the thickness. Glue and clamp it to
the inside of the existing gunwale. Use either epoxy or Polyurethane glue. 4
or more bronze or stainless wood screws either side of the crack will also
give extra strength.

It will be strong enough but the repaired gunwale will be stiffer then the
other one. That may not matter depending where is it located on the gunwale.
