Bill,
My best advice, as an ex-tour guide and instructor......
Forget the "divorce boat" and go rent Sheila a recreational kayak for a weekend. Make sure it's a rec boat, not a touring boat. If you have the chance to try out some Wilderness Systems boats, start with a Pungo(very open cockpit)or Manteo. Let her get very comfortable in the rec boat before having her try out your boat or another touring type boat.
Of course then she'll want her own 18' Aluet boat and that should keep you both busy this winter!
I'm not really knocking tandem boats, they can be great fun and have certain advantages. But being in separate boats has a lot of advantages too. I've always enjoyed being able to check out the things I want to look at while he does his thing. We both get to see a lot more this way as sometimes our interests are quite different.
Whichever way you go, try before you buy! That's what rental boats are for. Even though a manufactured double is quite different from a skin double, she can still try out the smaller cockpit and see if maybe she can get used to it. The most important thing to remember, if it's not exactly what you want/like/are comfortable in, it WILL sit in the garage next to the excersise bike and home gym!
Good luck to you both and keep us updated!
