Harry,
Splitting wood for kayak ribs works extremely well. You don't need to
and shouldn't start with a board. Start with a log. I use northern white
cedar (arborvitae). It splits easily, bends adequately when steamed and
is light weight. After splitting I run the pieces through a planer and
then saw to width. There is a lot of waste, but the material is free.
