Thanks for the replies. I'm currently using copper bang plates on the bow and
stern, I do believe a full keel strip and some smaller chine strips will help.

Also, awhile back I posted about using spruce fence boards at the local Home
D. to laminate together to make a single bladed paddle. I wasn't too happy
with that. It seemed like a lot of work for a not so great end result (though
I admit my gluing could have been better). While in the store the other day
it occured to me that I could save a lot of planing if I found a way to
strengthen one board instead of laminating two toghether. So I grabbed
another clear board and cut out the outline of the paddle, then glued a 1/4"
thick ash strip down the shaft. Much less material to remove and I don't
think it will add too much to the weight or compromise strength(I just feel
foolish for wasting all that time on the first one). I'll let you know if it
snaps.
