Regarding baidarka shape in relation to rough water
handling, an explanation put forth by Frank Goodman
made sense to me.
A wide, flat bottomed kayak will want to keep its
bottom parallel to the surface of the water. This is
good when the water is flat but bad when the surface
of the water is troubled by waves. A narrow round
sided kayak like the baidarka on the other hand has no
such tendency. This makes the boat feel tippy to the
first-time user, but once mastered, the boat will be
more comfortable in rough water.
And then there is the flex factor pointed out by
Peter.
