I've been trying various tree branches in northern Cal, not having much
luck, when today I came across a crew trimming eucalyptus trees around
power lines. I grabbed up an armful of 1/2" branches with green bark (new
growth) and brought them home. They bend fairly well without any
preparation, and become even more supple if soaked in boiling water for
several minutes. I've got some drying on pre-bending forms overnight to see
how well they hold their shape. We've certainly got lots of eucalyptus
here, it grows like a weed. ---Randall

the ribs on my first boat, the Brinck baidarka. There is not much Willow
in my area and local lumber yards never heard of yellow cedar. I live in
the mountains of Southern California where the wood available to me in the
surrounding forest is ponderosa, jeffrey, and pinon pines, and white
fir. I'm all for using materials I can gather locally, but can I make
ribs from any of these or shouldn't I even try?
