I've used redwood for housing construction and I find
that the sapwood (white or yellow color) doesn't seem
to vary from the heartwood (red or pink) from a
structural standpoint. There is, however, a huge
difference in rot resistance. The sapwood might as
well be doug fir which is candy to termites and
fungus. But since kayaks get to dry out and their
life expectancy is somthing like 10 years or so for a
frame you don't need to worry about rot, why are you
using redwood? Actually it's quite light weight for
it's strength but can be brittle and watch for knots.
They might as well be holes. You must live on the
west coast to be considering redwood. It seems like
redwood and doug fir and a few limited hardwoods is
all I can get in California without doing a weeks
worth of research and driving.
