This New Year's Day I went paddling with the local kayak club. The air
temp was 15 degrees Fahrenheit with a light breeze. We were in the
turbulent waters below a dam so there was ice only along the shore and the
occasional iceberg that came from upstream. One guy was practicing rolls
and what I saw gave me much to think about.
I am new to kayaking and have heard consistently about survival techniques,
like wet exits, re-entry and rolls, etc. But it seems to me that many of
these techniques in water conditions like Greenland or Alaska simply could
not work. The guy that was rolling was totally iced up. There was at
least half inch of ice on the kayak and the spray skirt. When he came to
shore he could not even get out of his kayak until he started breaking the
ice. This is something to think about. I would think the only option they
had in Greenland or Alaska was to roll up.
Does anyone have experience with and iced over kayak?
Dave
