That's a misconception. Jet engine thrust comes from mass exchange
at high velocity - the other, often forgotten half of Newton's
equation: F = ma + v(dm/dt). It is very common for folks to
simplify the explanations of what aircraft do in terms of forces,
however, it's conservation of momentum that really explains things.
