Subject: [baidarka] Sealing: synthetics vs natural

I covered a half-scale Greenlander for my 5 year old daughter with 10oz
cotton duck and sealed it with acrylic paint on the deck and water-based
floor polyurethane on the hull. I was quite surprised at how much paint the
cotton duck absorbed.
As I'm looking at using nylon for my first full-sized Greenlander do
synthetic materials absorb (or need) as much sealant as 'natural' cotton
materials? Does this translate into a significant increase in weight?
Also, I have discovered some nifty acrylic material used for marine
applications - has anyone used acrylic to cover a boat and what was your
experience with it?
Thanks Richard
