I took my baidarka out with weekend to try some rolling, after having done
it in the pool with a plastic river boat. And you know what, I couldn't do
it. I found I had remarkable sability to the point where I could lay on my
side floating with my head turned to the sky, but I just couldn't get it
over and snap it up.
I thought maybe it was due to the higher cockpit coaming (than say the
river boat and say a greenland kayak) which is typical of the Alaskan
kayaks. As David Zimmerly says in Qayaq, Rolling was never a main rescue
method in Alaska. The King Island rollers aside, I'm guessing that rolling
was a secondary consideration with a baidarka--it's just so leanable that a
brace will probably do in most instances.
Has anyone else been able to roll their baidarkas?
