Hi Flemming - In our Club rolling any type of boat is an essential paddle
skill and is a key part of basic training programs. We run whole courses
devoted to the subject. Many paddlers (myself included) who learn to roll in
a pool in WW boats have initial problems 'graduating' to a sea kayak but for
basic rolling the principles are exactly the same. Persevere and you'll get
it.
A couple of our members have stitch and glue baidarkas and can roll these
without any problem. We even have a couple of guys who can roll Kleppers!
If you boat has such huge secondary stability you could try sculling up to
the surface from the capsize and hip flicking up from there. We commonly use
this when recovering from a capsize with a sail up (allows the water to run
off the sail before hip-flicking up).
I can't speak authoritatively on the history of who rolled what in Alaska
but for contemporary paddling I can't imagine being able to manage surf or
other serious breaking waves or really extend my paddle skills without a
roll.
