I've coated my kayak TWO RAVENS with exterior
waterbased polyurethane. So far it's holding up well
(its about a year old at this time) and seems to
maintain it's flexibility better than oil based poly.
the first time TR was skinned I used 8oz nylon and
oilbased poly and after about 6 months it became
really brittle (a sharp poke with a finger would yield
a bullseye in the coating). I unskinned the the kayak
and modified the cockpit a bit and reskinned with
13oz polyester and coated with waterbased polyurethane
tinted with pigment powder (from daniel smith) just a
little powder goes a long way and it will build as
coats are added but still remain somewhat translucent.
the one concern I have is that when the boat is wet
for extended periods (winter, outside, here in the
pacific northwest) some "fogging" will occur but goes
away when the boat dries out (I'm thinking that either
water is getting under the finish from the inside
(through the fabric) or is getting into the matrix of
the finish somehow. The finish is not delaminating
from the fabric or between coatings and seems to
handle abrasion pretty well. the cost of the poly is
about $40us/gallon and it took a gallon and a half to
put 16 coats on this 13'6" long 28" wide boat (it took
that many to get a smooth finish, next boat I'll
probably stop around 12)
