I think it was mostly a matter of not having any
experience with nylon at the time I wrote the book. I
didn't feel qualified to recommend it since I had not
used it.

My only reservation about nylon was in combination
with a lightly built wooden frame. I felt that it
didn't make sense to have a skin that was
substantially stronger than the frame. In case you had
to do frame repairs, you had to slit the seams and I
wasn't sure whether a nylon skin could be sewn back on
the frame after repairs. These may be entirely
unfounded fears.

Certainly, it seems that nylon is a perfect match for
an aluminum frame.

I have since ordered some nylon from George Dyson and
will be covering a wooden frame with it and may or may
not say bad things about it in the future.

I like canvas simply because I am familiar with it. It
does however rot after some years, starting at the bow
and the stern where moisture is trapped. House paint
cracks after a while and allows seepage into the boat.
Another problem. So George probably got it right with
the aluminum/nylon/hypalon combo. But I do like
working with wood and have no real desire to try
aluminum tubing. But I may yet become a convert to
aluminum.
