I supose you can say I used a sort of jig/form. I had an old kitchen
rolling pin (3" 1/2 diam) which I just clamped in my bench vice ( the kind
of vice that is attached to the edge of the bench not the top as a metal
working vice) I then screwed some scraps of pine on the top of the bench
leaving just enough space between the pinn and the "fence" for the rib to
fit in. This made a nice radius for the rib to wrap around. I stuck my
steamed ribs in between this arangement to the point I desired the bend,
and a quick eassy bend to almost a U shape did the trick. It would then
spring back to the desired profile for the rib. the whole move taking les
than 3 secconds and then I fitted it to my gunnels. Working swiftly to get
things in place before they cooled. Probably a minute or less. I had my
chop saw handy for any quick length trim if needed. Do be carefull with
this last move as the saw blade tends to dig in to the wet wood quite
easily if the rib is noth totaly flatly seated against the base and fence
of the chop saw, you could easily be in to some serious digit damage. If
you are working with a old fashion hand mitre saw I suspect as most people
are, you should not have to much trouble. I tried Bob Bouchers methot of
trimming steamed ribs with a pair of garden nippers and I found I could not
get through them this way. But then mine might be a bit dull.
Back to the bending part though I figure the natives that did this did not
use any forms other than their teeth, come to think of it they probably did
not use steam either. So I figure a good pair of gloves to keep from
burning yourself should be the only real set up you need.
On a seccond note I used my "pancake tank" compressor parked next to my
rolling pinn as a off-round form for the cockpit hoop I did on thursday,
and this came ourt just perfect. My point being that anything will do, just
look aroud the garage for the most approximate shape you want to give your
bent wood and wrapp it around that.
