Just in case PBS is too highbrow...anyone ever seen the movie "The Deadly
Mantis" (1957)? It contains what appears to be ethnographically accurate
footage of Greenlanders launching their kayaks (in the movie they're fleeing
a giant preying mantis). I think the boats and gear are genuine, rather
than props- the movie (a pretty cheesy 50's style horror film) makes use of
a lot of stock footage from the Air Force, and I'm guessing they just used
some anthropologist or traveller's film stock for the eskimo scenes. I've
been tempted to try to capture still shots from it so I can take a closer
look at the Greenlander's stuff.
