Subject: [baidarka] Rib bending failures

This past weekend I attempted to steam bend my ribs for my Greenland boat that I
am building following Chris Cunningham's article from Sea Kayaker. I tried to
use air dried white oak which was soaked in water for 1 week and then steamed
for 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, I had only ~90% success rate. Most of the ribs cracked or split
in the bends. The grain (porous part) runs at about a 45 deg or less to the
wide side of the rib.
Question 1: How should the grain run in relation to the wide side of the rib?
Question 2: Is air dried white oak the best choice? I live in the upper
Midwest and can also find ash and pine.
Question 3: Did I just have an uncooperative board?
Thanks for any suggestions.
