Woodcraft Supply used to sell a forged one, but it wasn't
inexpensive. There is (or was) a book called "The making of Tools" by a
gentlemen named Alexander ? (sounds like "why gars") that would classify a
froe as a knife with a handle perpendicular to its long axis. Under his low
tech approach, access to a propane torch, hammer, hacksaw, drill, grinder
and/or file would could probably be all that's needed. A piece of leaf
spring or a rotary lawn mower blade would probably make an excellent tool
blank.

I held a bowie knife with Visegrips once for a lightweight application on a
small chunk. Since that worked reasonably well on a short term basis, I
image that something a little more refined is pretty easy to sctatch up.
