I heard a radio interview with George Dyson the other day (George wrote
"Baidarka"). He has a new book out about his dad's work on
atomic-powered spacecraft(!). The title is "Project Orion: The True
Story of the Atomic Spaceship".

On another, somewhat tangential note, I came across the 1989 edition of
a 1949 book by F. Spencer Chapman (who documented Gino Watkins' Air
Route expedition, as described in the Little Kayak books). The book is
titled "The Jungle is Neutral", about his experiences behind the
Japanese lines in Malaya during WW2. The book is fascinating. He
suggests that the difference between survival and death for a
left-behind British trooper in the jungle was mainly his attitude. No
kayaks of course, but plenty of ethnology.

Has anyone read his other books? "Watkin's Last Expedition", "Northern
Lights", "Helvellyn to Himalya"? He has a keen eye for the native people
and customs, I'll what he has to say about kayaking in Greenland is
worth a read.
