We've found ForwardAir to be the cheapest. It isn't door to door.
http://www.forwardair.com They tend to go airport to airport.

Depending on the manager, they might require a crate for insurance.
Yes, crates are *heavy*, not to mention hard to move. We had to
borrow our neighbor's low & flat trailer.

What is nice about ForwardAir is that they don't base on weight, it
seems to be size, so if you crate your kayak it's the same price as
uncrated. (Note: call to check on policy and get a price quote)

I've received one kayak that way (bubble wrap, was fine) and sent
one via a crate.

FA comes highly recommended from the newsgroups. They seem good.

Once, in a horrible boat dispute, it cost us $600 to send the boat
back (from Austin, TX to Michigan) with some sort of truck freight.
[If you buy a boat on a Visa card, the boat is awful, and the
company goes under, you still have to attempt to return the goods!]

On the other hand it cost us around $114 or $140, I can't remember,
to send a boat from Austin to Pennsylvania via ForwardAir.
