I'm bone stupid about Iqaxs except that I know baidarka is a Russian word. So
from a British & W. Greenland kayak background I approached the subject with
caution. I went to Corey Freedmans school in Anacortes and sure enough I came
out with a boat, a fair amount of knowledge and a few questions. I am
impressed with the aromatic polyurethane he uses. It is nontoxic, quick (90
minutes) and doesn't smell much. It appears to be very durable. It will gas
off for a few days to a week depending on the climate, but after a day it is
relatively stable. Car top and a paddle are not issues. 1000 miles on the
rack after 1 days dry did leave minor black stains from my straps, but they
are coming out.
QUESTION: my Iqax is 17' X 20.5." For a guy that weighs 215 and has a
dominant percentage in his shoulders a drop of 1 inch and a change from hard
chine to multi-chine is shall we say, exciting and wet. I love the boat but I
can't figure out how to pad out the cockpit. This is not a camping boat. It's
light and fast, so no butt pads are required, the floor boards are enough.
Yes, I found out the hard way that even 1/3" of seat softness IS too much. So
what do I do with the thighs & hips, etc.? Am I wrong here in applying
Greenland standards to an Aleut boat? I know they don't have the same roll by
any strech.
Thanks,
Kevin
