In addition to the excellent advice in Paul's post I
want to bring up a method I read about in an old Small
Boat Journal article on building Kodiak style boats.
What they did is build the deck and then cut three or
four forms out of plywood that they attached to the
gunwales. They attached the keelson and the stringers
to these forms by means of temporary lashings.
Now with the hull shape fixed and the hull right-side
up, they installed ribs using the keelson and
stringers as a form. I haven't tried this myself but
the article was written by a high-school teacher who
was having his high-school students build the boats in
this manner so it must be a pretty fool-proof method.
So they pushed the ribs in place, bending them to the
right shape in the process, clamped the two ends,
marked them, trimmed them and then re-installed the
rib.
Another thing to try if you're not too proud is to
shim the stringers in places where they are too far
from the ribs. The problem with replacing ribs after
all the stringers are in place is that the ribs do
some shrinking after they dry so if the rest of the
ribs are already dry, the new wet rib has to be
slightly oversize.
