Yes. And maybe. ;-) It sounds like a lot of work though. Here is a tip
for finding wood if the local lumber yards dont have what you want. Its a
different kind of work. Look for sawmills under "Lumber" in the Yellow
pages. The smaller the sawmill the better, because they are more likely
to take the time to help you find what you need, or even cut it for you.
if none are listed, ask one of the lumber yards where the nearest small
sawmill is. If you live in a forested part of the world, you are probably
no more than an hour or two drive from some kind of small sawmill. I go
to a guy who has a portable sawmill on his property that is probably less
than 200 feet square!(minus wood piles). And its dirt cheap, wholesale
price too. I can get a 20 foot board for $5 that would cost me 20 at the
store. It'll be greenish wood, but some people swear by it. I havent made
green gunnels yet but I just got done installing 6 green stringers.

I go through the extra effort to get good gunnel wood because it seems
that everything that can go wrong always does. Eventually, if I ever get
good at this, I hope to start building from scraps and less perfect wood,
because I really dont like being a consumer of fine, clear old timber
when there are other ways to get the same results.

On my first boat I probably made 7-8 trips to 3-4 lumber yards before
finally finding an 18 foot clear spruce board.
