I haven't tried this yet, but since the topic of fabrics has come up and
this list has been slow lately, I'll mention it now. Home Depot has
polyester roofing reinforcement (which I assume means it's widely available)
available in 40"x81' rolls for $55 (I'm guessing this is cheap compared to
most sources, though I've bought aircraft dacron for less).
I've been fiddling with a 4" roll of the same stuff. I'm not sure what the
weight is, but it's about 1/16" thick, stretchy, and absorbant. The
absorbancy might increase the weight of the covering, but on the other hand
coatings stick to it with no trouble. It's designed to be used with
elastomeric sealants (hypalon roofing paints, I think), and the product
literature says that properly sealed it can handle water pressure of > 1000
psi.
Polyurethane glue will bind it to anything, but seems to weaken the fabric
so I can tear it by hand. System3 epoxy wets it out nicely, remains
flexible though not stretchy, and I can't tear it by hand - much tougher
than 6oz fiberglass, for example.
The stretchyness ("contouring") is what has me most intrigued, besides the
fact that I only have to go down the street to get it. The narrow width is
a bit of a drawback, though.
Below is HomeDepot.com's description of it (under Building Materials/Roofing
and Roof Coatings/Roof Coating Reinforcing Materials)
