I did build one SOF boat using canvas (a decked poling skiff), but cotton
fabric is not a particularly good match to my very strong frame materials.
Cotton canvas is actually very heavy for its strength (or very weak for its
weight). Worse, it's prone to rotting; and while it seems fairly abrasion
resistant in itself, abrasion of the coating allows water to enter the weave
and feed the rot. I live in the cool, damp PNW, and use my boats
year-round, and don't baby them.
