I have been using the replacement paddle I carved out of Sitka Spruce using
an angle grinder. The grinder vaporizes the wood, instant gratification . So
much faster than "traditional tools". Except for the mess of wood powder
cant think of a better way to shape. This paddle is heavier with a tighter
grain than the previous paddle (also of Sitka Spruce) and is also much
stiffer. Hopefully it will hold up better. I am not sure if the difference
in weight is because the wood is denser or if it is just greener/wetter. I
am 6'1.5" tall paddle a 19" wide boat and the length of the paddle is equal
to that of my upper reach when standing flat on the ground. It turns out the
length exactly splits the difference between my too short paddle and my too
long paddle. it feels right when paddling and best of all it barely fits
diagonally into my compact pickup's bed/shell with the door closed .
